In preparation for the Art & Architecture Trail on 16 & 17 September this week “Nature and Nurture” an installation commissioned as part of “For the Love of Lettuce” Melbourne’s Celebration of its Market Gardening Heritage has been installed and it looks amazing- the piece represents the two elements needed to grow healthy produce – nurturing hands of the market gardeners and the rain to feed the plants.
Thanks to a Sharing Heritage Grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund the Melbourne Festival Team are digging deep this year to unearth memories and anecdotes from Melbourne’s Market Gardening past and look to the future with the three remaining Market Gardeners – Heaths of Melbourne, F Jackson & Son and W Sharp & Sons.
In addition to 150 Artists in over 70 venues on the Art & Architecture Trail we will be officially unveiling the other four pieces commissioned to celebrate Melbourne’s Market Gardening Heritage. Photographer Christopher Mear has been making regular visits to all three market garden to photograph the gardeners at work and their produce, a selection of these images will be displayed around the Trail. Artist Stephen Parker aka DZR has been inspired by a creature who Loves Lettuce even more than the Melbourne Festival Team – look out for drifts of SNAILS in unexpected place, LETTUCE BEWARE!
Meet our Gardeners in the Food Fayre and see their produce around the Trail. Listen out for Composer Rosie Clements who is coming back to her rural roots and creating six short pieces inspired by Melbourne and its produce so listen and enjoy! Finally meet the Mel-Bear of Melbourne inspired by market gardening folk lore he will share his words of wisdom with visitors great and small!
Put the 16th & 17th September in your diary and head for Melbourne for a weekend of amazing art, fantastic food, magnificent music and LOTS of LOVELY LETTUCE!
